Sporty, obory a předměty ve škole

se používají bez členu:

I like volleyball and hockey. I play baseball quite often.

I love  mathematics, biology, history and computer science.

Instituce:

prison, church, hospital, school, university nepoužíváme člen v případě, že jsou ve větě uvedeny pro účel, kterému slouží.

Např. My husband is in prison. (= He is imprisoned. He is probably a thief.) Peter is now in hospital. (= Peter is ill)

Ale: My husband is in a the prison.   I am going to the hospital today. (e.g. to visit somebody)

Geografické názvy:

1. určitý člen používáme u:

-  řek (the Amazon), pohoří (the Alps), pouští (the Sahara), oceánů (the Pacific), souostroví (the Bahamas), kanály (Canal Grade)

- divadla, kina, hotely (the Ritz), galerie (the National Gallery), muzea (the British Museum),

  ! kromě: We do not use the definite article if the name of the hotel or restaurant is the name of the owner, e.g.,Brown’s; Brown’s Hotel; Morel’s; Morel’s Restaurant, etc.

-  známé budovy a umělecká díla (the Empire State Building; the Taj Mahal; the Mona Lisa; the Sunflowers

 ! kromě: Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square - vždy bez členu)

- noviny  (The Times; The Washington Post)

2. nulový členy používáme u:

- hor (Mount Everest), jezer (Lake Ontario) a kontitentů (Europe), zemí (England),

  !výjimky: The United States of America, The Czech Republic, + mn. číslo: the Netherlands.!

- parků, obchodů, restaurací, cest a silnic (s výjimkou číslovaných the M6)

Národy a lidé

Pokud chceme mluvit o národnostech, zpravidla nepoužíváme člen:

I am Czech. He's English.

Mluvíme-li o lidech dané země, zpravidla použijeme určitý člen:

The Czechs, The Americans, The Swiss

Skupiny lidí + povolání (talk about groups of people):

- používáme člen určitý

Life can be very hard for the poor.
I think the rich should pay more taxes.
She works for a group to help the disabled

Rodiny (families):

the Obamas; the Jacksons

- u povolání používáme člen neurčitý

I work as a teacher.

Když mluvíme o druhu

Mluvíme-li o druhu, např. zvířat, je nejlepší použít nulový člen a množné číslo, jinak člen neurčitý:

• Cobras are dangerous.
• A cobra is a dangerous animal.

Hudební nástroje (musical instruments):

- používáme člen určitý

Joe plays the piano really well.(= Joe can play any piano)
She is learning the guitar.(= She is learning to play any guitar)

Služby (to refer to a system or service):

- používáme člen určitý

How long does it take on the train. (Ale: I go by train. - bude bez členu, protože se jedná o pevnou vazbu)
I heard it on the radio.
You should tell the police.
